If a label doesn't tell you how many milligrams of each active your dog gets per day, you can't evaluate the product — and that's usually the point. Here's the five-minute skill that makes you unfoolable in the supplement aisle.

Trick #1: the proprietary blend
A proprietary blend lists a group of ingredients with one combined weight — "Joint Blend, 800 mg" — without revealing the split. Legally, the blend could be 780 mg of cheap filler and a sprinkle of everything impressive. There is exactly one reason to hide the split. When you can't see the milligrams, you can't know what you're giving your dog.
Trick #2: per-chew vs. per-serving math
Big number on the front, small serving footnote on the back. A label shouting "500 mg glucosamine!" per chew looks strong — until you read that a 70 lb dog's serving is one chew. At the ~20 mg/lb reference, that dog needs roughly 1,400 mg. Always compute: mg per chew × chews per day for your dog's weight.
Trick #3: the ingredient parade
Fifteen actives on the front label reads impressive, but a chew only weighs so much. The more ingredients crammed in, the less room each one has to hit a meaningful dose. Three actives at clinical amounts beat fifteen at fairy-dust levels every time.
The five-point label checklist
- Named actives with individual mg amounts — no blends.
- A serving chart by body weight — dogs aren't one size.
- Actives at levels that survive the math for your dog's weight.
- GMP-certified manufacturing stated on the label or site.
- Honest expectations — a brand that says "4–6 weeks" is telling the truth; one that says "instant relief" is not.
Then compare on cost per day
Tub price is meaningless on its own. Divide price by days of supply at your dog's correct dose — a $20 tub that lasts a big dog 15 days is more expensive than a $45 tub that lasts 60. This one calculation reorders most of the market.
