The daily logistics
Shift walks to early morning and evening (pavement test included). Carry water on anything longer than a lap of the block — collapsible bowls weigh nothing. At home: multiple water stations, refreshed daily, plus ice cubes as entertainment. A baseline: dogs need roughly an ounce of water per pound of body weight daily, and hot days push that meaningfully higher.
Who's at extra risk
Flat-faced breeds (bulldogs, pugs, boxers) pant inefficiently and can overheat on a warm-not-hot day. Seniors, overweight dogs, thick double coats, and heart-condition dogs all carry less margin. For these dogs, treat 80°F like other dogs' 90°F.
The signs that can't wait
Early: frantic panting, thick drool, seeking shade, slowing hard. Act here: shade, water offered (not forced), cool — not ice-cold — water on belly, paws, and armpits. Emergency: wobbling or collapse, vomiting, bright red or purple gums, glassy eyes. That's active cooling en route to the nearest vet, no wait-and-see. Heatstroke moves fast and the damage is internal; being wrong about the severity in the cautious direction costs nothing.
And the car, said plainly
A parked car at 75°F passes 100°F inside within about 20 minutes, cracked windows included. There's no version of “just five minutes” that's safe in summer. Leave the dog home with the floor vents — they genuinely prefer it.
